Grandmaster Samuel Kwok comes from a martial arts family, his uncle being a famous White crane Master, and has been training in Wing Chun for over 40 very dedicated years, his skill and understanding is immense. He has trained with the legends of the system, his primary teachers, the sons of Great Grandmaster, Ip Man.He still learns from Grandmasters Ip Ching and Ip Chun to this day. You all now have the chance to learn the system taught the traditional way, which gives the practitioner elements of true Kung Fu rarely seen or understood. It is an exercise in physical and mental conditioning that is continuously challenging those elements.

UMAA is now affiliated with Grandmaster Kwoks Wing Chun Martial Arts Association and all UMAA students are now part of a worldwide family of Martial Art schools. If you are ever visiting their countries you are now free to attend classes there and meet your kung fu family, just email or call them and you will be welcome. This is a great honour for us all, the true legacy of Ip Mans Wing Chun is not just fighting skill that is beyond compare, health and happiness through practice, but now a huge family of friends, contacts, relationships, for real, we are all now privy to the power of Kung Fu, cultivating ourselves emotionally, intellectually, physically, this is the real thing!

To practice it is to challenge yourself to achieve perfection in motion, that flows with power, speed and pin point accuracy, with the delivery of energy executed with maximum physical efficiency. This in combat is adjoined by the element left outside of the school…always, and that is “cruelty”. In the Kwoon, (School), you are with your brothers and sisters, working together to a common goal, and helping each other get there. If having to use it for self protection, you do everything to destroy the attacker within milliseconds of the conflict starting. With blistering fast, powerful and vicious striking actions that cannot be countered, the flash fire is over before it could even get started, you go home safe and sound Real Wing Chun is teaching this. Be serious and dedicated to your training and loyal and loving to your new Kung Fu family.

We are now approaching form training in the traditional sense with immediate effect. The forms are essentially the only difference in what we are doing, the application is the same in the majority of cases. You will learn what the family is learning, and when you meet, train, share holiday moments with them all, you will work your skills with a sense of family friendliness and honesty. Show them what you can with courtesy and also listen to their ideas . All the best.

Many thanks to Dan for taking the classes while I’ve been away. Dan will now continue to coach the Thursday evening sessions, so if you want to train without your critical and moaning Sifu around, Thursday’s the day ;( The training in Portugal was relaxed and focused mainly on de-construction of the forms. An approach I shall be utilising more and more in class. I helped out with a few demonstrations, met some of GM Kwok’ instructors and exchanged training tips and tricks. In all a great experience, and was great to learn the Knife and pole form and applications as taught by Grandmaster Ip Man himself, undiluted. I’ll be covering it during our very own training camp weekend so get yourself a pair of knives asap.

GM Kwok is a very humble and generous teacher and really took his time to explain to his students the applications of the forms, stressing that the system should be explored by all practitioners as there are a myriad of ways to apply it. He also shared many stories involving various challenge matches, fights and the need to apply your skills outside of any restrictions and rules of combat, recalling one situation he found himself in where winning the fight mean’t nearly taking a guys eye out…ouch! Training in the sun, on the beach was great, and very relaxing. There were BJJ guys there, Kali, Tai Chi, Mantis all trading skills. My shoulder injury got some attention too, and a couple of powerful lap sao applications mean’t my spine got stretched .

All in all a great experience, I think we may all have to go next year and make it part of your networking and learning development, so start saving now!

Sifu.

You’ll notice they are all slightly different! Understand those differences, and your skills grow further. Follow the maxims of the system and you will eventually know Wing Chun.

I also downloaded the “Wing Chun Masters” app to have a look at. It’s pretty basic and some of the techniques are not the way I would recommend them done but for beginners, it’s definately worth a look. only £3.99.

How do you train striking power in Wing Chun?

The first point of training is usually the wall bag. This piece of training equipment essentially represents the strongest, most grounded opponent you will ever meet. In Wing Chun we learn to drive all our body power into the wall Bag, which soaks up the impact force without yielding, this in turn puts stress on the joints of the body and over time strengthens them, it also conditions the striking surface of the hands. From extensive wall bag training, the Wing Chun practitioner develops very strong punching power and body structure.

Further training for striking power and techniques comes from pad and bag work and of course we have the wooden man which is unique to the Wing Chun system in terms of its use, the Jong being representative of a very strong and rooted opponent. The Jong teaches us correct footwork and positioning with co-ordinated body structure and bridging power. Often Wing Chun punching is mis-understood, and applied more like a hammer blow, with power being thrown from the shoulder, which limits its effectiveness and impact power. The (Chung Choi) or Thrusting punch should always be thrown straight outwards and upwards with the elbow relaxed and pointing to the floor, legs supporting the elbow. When it connects, its power and feel is very different to a punch thrown from the shoulder. The wing chun punch feels like being hit by a battering ram. Even from an inch away, I’ve not met many people that wanted it demonstrated on them twice. If you practice Wing Chun, get yourself a wall bag and train it every day. Practice at least 500 strikes per day and use a good liniment rub to aid recovery in the arms and hands. If you feel sore, allow your hands to recover before further practice. Build the power in your wrists, elbows, knees and ankles slowly. Rushing it will only cause un-necessary injury and delay progress.

These are filled with brewing herbal liniments called “Dit Da Jow” (hit and Fall Wine).

These liniments are very good at promoting qi and blood flow circulation, and excel at treating sports injuries. Herbal liniments are traditionally used for martial arts injuries, such as bruises, contusions, strains, and sprains and generally contain herbs that stop pain, reduce inflammation, and break up local stagnation of blood.

If you’ve suffer with bruising at the early stages of training or are working your wall bag or sparring hard, use it to aid recovery. It’s available to purchase now.
